Jaw Locking

Jaw locking is one of the more alarming TMJ symptoms because it interferes with something you do constantly without thinking: opening and closing your mouth. It can show up in two ways. In an open lock, the jaw gets stuck open and won’t close easily; in a closed lock, the jaw won’t open more than a small amount. Either can be frightening the first time it happens.

The cause usually traces back to the small disc that cushions the temporomandibular joint. When that disc shifts out of its normal position, it can block the smooth gliding motion of the joint, so the jaw catches or jams. Chronically tight jaw muscles and long-standing clicking or popping often precede locking, because that muscle tension and joint strain gradually change how the disc moves.

Massage can’t reposition the disc, but it plays an important supporting role by reducing the muscle tension and guarding that contribute to locking. Releasing the masseter, temporalis, and the muscles deep around the joint helps the jaw move more freely and can ease the spasm that sometimes accompanies a locking episode. Calming the nervous system also reduces the protective clenching that makes everything tighter. Our TMJ-focused massage and SomaFace techniques in Parkville aim to restore easier, more comfortable jaw movement.

Because locking can point to a structural issue within the joint, it’s wise to be evaluated by a dentist or TMJ specialist, especially if your jaw locks frequently, stays stuck, or is very painful. Massage works best alongside that professional guidance, helping the surrounding muscles support a healthier range of motion.
